THIS year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and numerous events have been going on throughout the area to mark the occasion.

However people in the area have long been remembering the bravery of those who fought in the conflict, shown in this picture from July 1991.

Here pupils from Mount Pleasant Primary School in Clayton-le-Moors helped create a display in the hall as part of a project honouring those who fought in the war.

The school often held different displays and school drama performances during this era, such as Christmas shows, musicals and puppet performances.

The scene depicted is from the Battle of the Somme and shows 11-year-old pupil Eileen Swift standing guard over the 'injured' Andrew Birtwell,10, in the display.

The pupils performance came 75 years after the infamous battle began in northern France.

In total more than three million men fought in this battle and one million men were wounded or killed.

The Accrington Pals battalion was one of those who suffered huge losses in the battle.

The battalion suffered over 600 casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, leaving the community back home shattered.

To this day an annual service is held each year in Hyndburn commemorating the lives lost in the Battle of the Somme.
