HUNDREDS of revellers packed into a pub car park erupted into delight as England won on penalties to send the national team into the quarter finals.

Fans basked in the sunshine at the Havelock Inn as they watched the World Cup knockout match against Colombia on the pub's giant screen.

After a cagey first half, fans screamed with joy as Harry Kane put away his penalty in the second half.

Looking like England were set to glide into the next round, a late goal by Yerry Mina deep into additional time silenced the 400-strong crowd.

Tensions rose as England could not find the winner and Columbia missed chances.

However tears of happiness streamed from people’s faces as England battled through extra time and saw England their first world cup penalty shootout.

Danny Roberts, 33, from Blackburn, said: “It was so good to see people down here for England to win.

“I thought they played well in the first half and deserved the win.

“I can’t wait to go into the next round now and play Sweden.”

Tom Anderson, 30, from Darwen, said: “I thought England deserved a win because we were better.

“The Colombia players were trying to rough up the English players but we stood up to it and carried on.”

Anna Collins, 24, from Blackburn said: “It’s been a great day and I felt nervous before I came here.

“It’s nice to come to a family-friendly event like this.”

Earlier on in the afternoon Sweden knocked out Switzerland to see them through to the quarter finals, and will face England at the Samara Arena in Samara at 3pm on Saturday.

The Havelock’s owner, Darren Heggie, said: “It has been a fantastic evening for everyone.

“We have been lucky with the weather.

“It was nice to see children, men and women here today all enjoying the day.

“We had a bouncy castle for the little ones and a play area and there were burgers and hotdogs to eat.

“We’ve had great crowds down to all the matches and I hope to see everyone here again on Saturday."
