WHEN was it okay to revel in someone else’s failure? This week we saw Germany bow out of the World Cup and with it a whole load of folk seemed to think it was the best thing that ever happened.

As a football fan I have one thing to say. Never ever speak too soon. I would rather have had the record of the German national side and get knocked out of the first round of the World Cup this year than our record of 52-year losers.

What tends to happen at this time of year is how all the views of part-time football fans tend to get more airplay than anyone else.

I have seen many things but people losing the plot cheering the fourth and fifth goals against lowly Panama was ridiculous.

Having dispatched the mighty Panama earlier this week we actually had people talking about winning the World Cup. I am living in a country where beating a really poor side warrants over-excited commentary?

The pundits are just trying their best to get excited over what is still an average football team.

Shockingly the news channels are telling us we have done better than we expected. Really? We have Premier League players who earn more in a week than those who we played against earn in a year.

I thought we were expected to beat those teams?

I'm a jinx, so I won’t be putting the flag of St George up. I’m not putting an England shirt on and I won’t be backing our boys. When I do we lose.

We can do all those things on July 15 if we reach the final. Up until then put all your paraphernalia away and stop talking up average performances.

I am also a supporter of the female pundits and commentators. They actually talk more sense that the male footballers who are doubling up as experts in the beautiful game.

The major mistake TV companies mistake is that is they roll out former footballers when they should be asking managers to give their views. Only managers are likely to dissect a game whilst footballers don’t want to criticise fellow professionals.

And to round things off why are we all loving Russia again? A few months back the government was having us believe that Russia was this horrible totalitarian nation which was hell bent on knocking people off on our streets and engineering elections.
