THE traditional fingerposts in a town centre are to be refurbished and three new posts installed.

Rawtenstall has eight of the cast iron signposts which direct people to attractions such as the East Lancashire Railway (ELR), the ski slope, shops, the market and other tourist attractions.

But some posts are in a poor state of repair with fingers pointing the wrong way or to places that no longer exist, broken fingers and illegible text.

They will now be refurbished and three new fingerposts will also be installed at the ELR, McDonald’s and The Whitaker museum and art gallery.

The work is due to be completed in the next couple of months.

Council leader Alyson Barnes said: “Rawtenstall is a wonderful place to visit with lots to see and do for people of all ages

“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to find their way around and to experience all the great tourist attractions that we have.

This supports the positive developments already happening in Rawtenstall at Ski Rossendale, The Whitaker, the ELR, Spinning Point and the market, as well as the planned events such as The Clog Market artisan market and The Great Get Together in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox.”
