A would-be thief jumped over an 8ft-high fence to escape after coming face-to-face with his victim.
The burglar had scaled the fence to get into North Valley Motors, North Valley Road, Colne about 3pm on Monday, and was searching a Transit van left unlocked there when the owner found him.
The man jumped on top of the van and over the fence and ran away, leaving a bicycle behind outside the fence. Nothing was stolen.
He was white, in his early 20s, 5ft 8in, wearing white baseball cap, black bomber jacket, white trainers and glasses.
