The cabbie, from King's Taxis, had taken two males from company's office, in Yorkshire Street, to a destination just off Pendle Way, when the incident happened, at just before 1.20am.
The passengers paid for the fare up front, but when at their drop off point, attacked the driver and stole £30 cash from him.
Two males aged 16 and 19 were arrested near to the scene of the attack in connection with the incident.
