I thought readers might like to know a little more about the war memorial featured on the pictures of Mellor.

This is basically taken from Neil Summersgill's excellent history of Mellor. Try to get hold of a copy if you can.

The memorial was unveiled in 1921 with the names of Mellor soldiers who died during the 1914-18 War.

At the time war broke out the population of Mellor was about 1200 and yet 152 men signed up to defend king and country which was a very high proportion.

There is no record on the memorial as to where the 22 men commemorated met their deaths but one of them, Joseph Houldsworth was part of the British Expeditionary Force of 1914 that was sent to Northern France to give support to stem the German tide and he was killed in action.

Does anyone know more of the backgrounds of these soldiers?
