POLICE are mystified about the identity and fate of a Burnley couple who appear to have vanished without trace whilst kayaking off the Jersey coast.

There have been no confirmed sightings of Andrew Keeble and Hannah Tye since they were spotted buying a kayak and life jackets at a campsite on Jersey on Friday despite a massive sea search.

But detectives on Jersey are working with their French counterparts to establish whether two people spotted on a French beach 12 miles away are the missing couple, who gave their address as Healey Wood Road, Burnley.

Police have not been able to positively identify the pair, who fitted the description of the couple and were seen hauling a dark coloured kayak in orange and red life jacket up the beach at Hatainville, Normandy, around 7.30am on Saturday.

The couple may have managed to paddle in their kayak to France, police said.

Inspector David Bermingham said the couple were still officially missing.

He said that they had also been unable to confirm their names and address, which the couple used when they signed into the campsite at Rozel.

No one has reported the couple missing and the address they gave in Burnley appeared to have been empty.

Insp Bermingham said: "A couple matching their description were seen just about to go to sea in their craft and have not been seen at the camp site since even though some of their clothes are still there.

"However nobody has reported them missing and we haven't been able to make contact with any of their family.

"We don't definitely know if we have the correct the details of these people who are missing.

"We have no passports or documentation so we are not satisfied at this stage that we have got the correct details for them.

"The address they have given doesn't really stack up. They are not known at the address they left at the camp site. It's been empty and we have got doubts about them living there even though they probably do live in that area.

Air and sea searches were carried out on Monday but nothing was found.
