Criminal damage this summer has dropped by 32 per cent compared to last year, police in Colne said.

Officers throughout Pennine division have been campaigning against vandalism, with a series of workshops in primary and secondary schools, as well as a crackdown on offenders.

Sgt John Fryer, of Colne police said: "We have put in a lot of effort and hopefully the message is getting through that is is not acceptable to go round causing damage.

"It's not a victimless crime - if you smash someone's wing mirror off, they have to pay to get it replaced.

"We had 80 fewer incidents in April to July this year than we had over the same period last year, and that's 80 fewer victims, but obviously we would like to see it reduced even further."
