A DAY out with his best friend came to a heart-breaking end for a 32-year-old man.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Carl Robert Waring caught his best friend trying to kiss his partner.

In the confrontation that followed the best friend admitted they had been having a sexual relationship behind Waring's back.

The girlfriend denied the claim but in a drink and drug fuelled rage Waring armed himself with a knife to try and "scare the truth" out of the pair of them.

Waring, 32, of Edge End Lane, Great Harwood, pleaded guilty to affray. He was remanded on bail for a pre-sentence report.

Claire Grant, prosecuting, said the incident took place at the home in Antigua Drive, Lower Darwen, that Waring shared with his partner Louise Baron.

She said that on August 4 he had gone with his best friend, Carl Turner, to watch Blackburn Rovers in a pre-season friendly at Preston North End.

At about 9pm police were called to the house where they found Mr Turner sitting on top of Waring to restrain him.

"During the course of the evening it had come out that the defendant's best friend had been having a sexual relationship with his partner," said Mrs Grant. "This has caused him to go and get the kitchen knife."

Waring told police he and Mr Turner had come back from the football "drunk but happy." They had some cocaine and were all in high spirits.

Waring said he went upstairs for something and when he returned overheard something going on between his friend and his partner and Mr Turner confessed to them having an affair.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client had been provoked to say the least.
