A father battling an inoperable brain tumour is raising cash for the hospice that is treating him.

Carl Seery, 26, of Claremont Road, Accrington, even donned a lilac wedding dress in a bid to highlight his work for the East Lancashire Hospice, Blackburn, which he attends every week.

But the dad-of-one said: "I wanted to do something high profile and eye catching to raise as much money as I could but I've had a lot of funny looks and I feel very self conscious."

Mr Seery has an inoperable form of brain cancer which has led to him developing severe epilepsy, giving him hundreds of fits in the past two years.

It means he has to be cared for by his wife Samantha, 22, and daughter Baylie, three.

The event was designed to coincide with National Wedding Dress Day, an initiative launched by Take a Break women's magazine that invites all women to wear their wedding dress again and help raise money for charity.

Mr Seery said: "We heard that it was national wedding dress day and it sounded like a bit of fun, it's certainly unusual."

He said the wedding dress idea was a light-hearted way of dealing with a condition that has had a massive impact on his and his family's life.

The constant worry that he will have an epileptic fit means that it is difficult to plan for the future.

The former pupil at Hollins Community College, Accrington, said: "Days out can be ruined if I have a fit and even day to day I can't be left on my own so Samantha can't work.

"That's why the hospice has been fantastic. I go there every week and it's a break for both of us."

A wedding dress disco will take place on Friday that will see everyone who attends dressing up in bridal gowns and top hat and tails.

Samantha will be wearing her own wedding dress.

Mr Seery was diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2005. He has now had to give up work as an assembly worker for Altham office furniture firm Senator Inter-national and is undergoing gruelling chemotherapy sessions in a bid to reduce the size of the tumour.

The treatments have led to his hair falling out.

Doctors have said that the tumour is inoperable but they are now hoping to beat the condition with chemotherapy.

The wedding dress disco takes place this Friday at Stanley Street Working Men's Club, Accrington. For tickets and more information contact Carl and Samantha on 01254 601744.
