AN open day to mark the 200th anniversary of a brewery was hailed a success.

As well as celebrating its bicentenary birthday Thwaites brewery, Penny Street, Blackburn, was also raising funds for its chosen charity.

This year Thwaites adopted the British Heart Foundation after one of its employers died suddenly from a heart attack.

Organisers are still counting the money raised from the face painting, craft exhibitions, cake stalls and other activities from Saturday's event.

However Lynn Jepson, personnel director of Thwaites, estimated that the open day event held at the visitors centre, has taken the total money raised to over £30,000.

They have been fundraising since January.

Lynn Jepson said: "I am really pleased that the open day went so well. Around 150 people turned up. It has been a really good way to raise funds.

"The day has been enjoyable for the people who have been working and for the people who came along. We have even had visits from people who worked here years ago."
