A total of 28 students from Moorland Lower School in Darwen, earned certificates after they gained top marks in a maths challenge organised by NatWest among schools across the country.

The Telegraph summed up their maths masterclass for readers, with a story and this image, which we are reproducing from our archives and which also showed the school's two maths teachers, Glynn Vernon, left and Mike Mitchell.

They had obviously taught their pupils the right lesson, to ensure they came through the challenge with flying colours.

I wonder if these boys and girls still remember them - for no matter how old you are and how long it is since you sat behind a desk, there are always some teachers you remember better than others.

It might be because they threw blackboard dusters across the room if you weren't paying strict attention, produced mysterious explosions in Bunsen burners in the chemistry lab, brought dry historic facts to to life, or organised out of hours sailing clubs.
