IT'S doubtful if many Burnley folk would recognise the spot where this photograph was taken, back in 1936.

In the 80 years since this scene was captured by camera, this part of town has changed beyond recognition - and yet many will have often walked past it.

What is also surprising is the number of workers it needed to dig the criss crossing, tram tracks up from the cobbled street.

We've counted at least two dozen flat capped fellas in their clogs and collars and ties no less, wielding their picks and shovels, which has also caught the interest of several curious passers-by.

This spot was the junction of the old Gunsmith Lane and Yorkshire Street and the tram tracks were now surplus to requirements - the corporation having bought a new bus fleet the previous year.

In the background is the old Keirby brewery and on the left is just a corner of the old Yorkshire Hotel, once the most prestigious building the town centre, which roughly stood on the site of today's Keirby roundabout.

Centre right is Rishton Mill which was demolished for the construction of the Odeon cinema in 1937; while just off camera on the right would be the bridge taking the canal over, always known locally as the culvert.
