A HUSBAND and wife and their 18-year-old son appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged with money laundering.

Blackburn magistrates heard the appearance was a result of inquiries by the serious crime unit and included allegations of repeated trips to the Netherlands and the depositing of packages of cash around the UK.

The court was also told that a carrier bag containing £40,000 was hidden in woodlands in Blackburn while police were keeping observations.

Hassan Akhtar, 48, his wife Amera Akberali Akhtar, 42, and their son Jameel Hessain Hussain, 18, were sent to appear at Preston Crown Court on February 5 on a charge of money laundering. Their addresses cannot be revealed after the magistrates upheld an application by the prosecution on the grounds that their lives would be endangered if they were published.

The prosecution objected to bail, one of the grounds being for their own safety, but the magistrates granted bail to Amera Akhtar and her son. Hassan Akhtar did not apply for bail.
