A CENTURY of Rossendale buses was celebrated with a rally through the borough.

Specially repainted buses joined specially-preserved vehicles on Saturday for a tour around the area, and covering the original routes through Helmshore and Water.

An open day was also held at the headquarters of Rossendale Transport in Bacup Road, Rawtenstall.

A book about the history of the firm was also launched with photographs and information about the various styles of buses used throughout the 100 years.

And further events are planned before the end of the year, with the first commissioning of a scale model of one of the company's buses and a re-enactment in November of the first public bus service in Rossendale.

The bus was a new form of transport in January 1907 when the first trial run was held in Haslingden, and regular operation between Haslingden and Helmshore began in November.

The first bus between Waterfoot and Water ran in December that year, and was operated by the Rawtenstall Corporation.

David Wroe, who runs the Rossendale Transport Society website, said that he was delighted that the centenary was being marked.

He said: "I always associate these buses with my happy memories of growing up in Rossendale. You have to be a 70-plus something in age to remember the electric trams and I doubt that there are many left alive who remember the age of the steam tram.

"However, regardless of whether or not you remember any of the vehicles being shown off, the obvious pride and enthusiasm from people speaks to us across the ages.

"The buses are an important symbol of the area and its history, and it's great to see that being celebrated."
