A BANNED father-of-two caught riding a scooter claimed he bought it for his son and was demonstrating it.

Burnley magistrates heard how amphetamine addict Stewart Sturdy, 37, who struck just days after being ordered off the road, was also subject of a suspended jail term.

The defendant, now working as a coach painter, was jailed for a total of 180 days. Sturdy, of Prestwich Street, Burnley, admitted driving whilst disqualified, no insurance, no MOT and obstructing a police officer.

Sentencing, the bench told him the case was "quite dreadful" and added he had shown a complete disregard for court orders.

The defendant was given 90 days for the latest offences and the justices activated the 90 day suspended term.

He was banned for 18 months.

David Hartley, prosecuting, told the court the defendant was stopped riding the scooter and gave the name Damien Pye and a different date of birth.

Sturdy claimed he worked for Richard Wilkinsion Coach Builders in Whalley and was using a trader's policy.

Inquries revealed he had given the wrong name and did not work at the firm.

The defendant was arrested. He had a lenghty criminal record, including 15 previous convictions for driving whilst disqualified.

Jasmine Basnyet, defending, said Stury accepted he had been stupid to ride the scooter.

Miss Basnyet said Sturdy was remorseful for his actions.
