A DAD attacked his frightened former girlfriend and kicked the door in after turning up at her home shouting abuse at midnight, a court heard.

Burnley magistrates were told how drunken Damon Bell, 20, claimed he and victim, mother of two Danielle Muir had been split up about a week and he had lived there - but she said the relationship had been over six months.

Bell, of Acre Avenue, Stacksteads, admitted assault by beating and damage on July 15. He was given a 12 months conditional discharge and must pay compensation.

Bill Maude, prosecuting, said Bell arrived at her home and Miss Muir was woken up by banging on the front door. She saw the defendant kicking the door it went through. The victim was scared he would cause more damage.

Mr Maude said Miss Muir phoned her mother and the police, unlocked the door for her mother and within seconds Bell went into the living room and assaulted her.

Bell sat on top of her, squeezed her face, put his arms around her neck and grabbed her wrists to try to stop her from moving.

The defendant continued shouting abuse and then released his grip and sat back in the chair, still arguing with her. Police arrived and he was arrested.

Mr Maude said when the defendant was charged, he said: "I admit it and I'm ashamed." He had no previous convictions.

Bell, who was not legally represented, said: "I regret what I have done. We are back on speaking terms now but that's about it."
