PENDLE people should make sure they do not forget about cash hidden away in old bank accounts, the borough's MP said.

Gordon Prentice said he welcomed the national campaign by Halifax Bank of Scotland to trace the owners of so-called "dormant" bank accounts, which have not been used for many years.

In Pendle alone, the bank has identified 106 dormant accounts, with a total balance of £8,692.

The MP said: "There are all sorts of reasons why accounts become dormant. Banks and building societies have frequently changed ownership recently, while passbooks are lost or relatives pass away.

"The Government is planning to introduce a scheme to distribute accounts left dormant for over 15 years to charitable causes.

"But there should be no question of anyone losing money.

"Every effort should be made to re-unite the these funds with their owners and I am calling for all banks to follow HBOS's example. If there are 106 dormant accounts in Pendle that have been identified by just one bank, there must be many more in total that could be traced."
