THE newly formed Darwen Chamber of Trade is going from strength to strength, achieving a membership of 40.

Five founding members launched the organisation on June 28.

They asked traders to attend an informal meeting with a view to joining so they could talk to Chamber of Trade members and make contact with owners and managers of other Darwen businesses.

The chamber aims to give traders the chance to get their voices heard in the light of the many changes taking place in the town.

It is hoped to create a network in which businesses will be able to exchange information and be regularly informed on such matters as which proposals are planned for the town, how trends are changing and how the police are tackling crime.

At the first meeting, a silver shield and cup and a silver presidential chain all dating from the 19th century made for the former Chamber of Trade were presented to the new president, Andrew McAllister, 54, of the One Stop Copy Shop in Railway Road.
