BOROUGH leisure boss Damian Talbot has congratulated the Friends of Square Meadow for securing a former school field for sport and recreation
It’s founder and chairman Harry Blackwell has just completed a deal with town hall bosses allowing sport and recreation to continue at the green space on the former Darwen Moorland High School site.
Square Meadow was saved for public use in 2013 and now hosts three junior football teams and an archery club.
The Friends of Square Meadow needed to secure a longer lease to introduce the wider variety of sports they wished to bring on the land.
After four years negotiations have been finalised for the deal allowing cricket, rugby, rounders, cross country and athletics teams to use the field.
Blackburn with Darwen Council leisure boss Cllr Talbot: “I am delighted to hear that all of the work carried out by the Friends of Square Meadow is coming to fruition.
“Harry Blackwell has been an inspirational leader on this project.
“All those involved deserve credit for their efforts in reaching this point.”
Square Meadow was saved from future development after it emerged that it did not belong to the old school.
The committee’s next goal is to involve schools and bring competition to the field with the long-term goal being to use the space as an educational sporting resource.
