A man who was one of the UK’s first big lottery winners has died.

Mukhtar Mohidin, from Blackburn, won £17.9 million in 1994 which at the time was the biggest lottery win.

He remained a recluse after winning the money and shunned interviews and pictures.

Mr Mohidin, who was believed to be 63 at the time of his death lived in Warrington Street in the town but he later moved abroad.

After his National Lottery win he donated £300,000 to build a local community centre in Plane Street.

But after the steel structure went up internal wrangling led to the structure being abandoned. Some local Muslims were not keen on money which had many thought been gained through gambling so should not be used to build a place of worship.

Years after pressure from residents the metal structure was dismantled.

The funeral took place today at Slough Cemetery with prayers at the Jamia Masjid in the town earlier in the day.

Little Harwood Councillor Naushad Surve said, “Throughout his years he was a jolly and well-loved character and many people got on with him.

“His heart was always in Blackburn and he always wanted to help the community even before his Lottery win.

“He used to volunteer quite a lot and wanted to be a full part of the community and was always helpful.

“He also bought up and an amazing family and our condolences go out to them at this time."
