A TOWN travelled back seven decades in time as nostalgia swept the streets on a successful day that drew good crowds.
Darwen’s 1940s Day, first staged in 2010, triumphed over intermittent heavy rain as it evoked a special age.
Townsfolk and visitors of all ages enjoyed numerous displays, with vintage vehicles proving a big draw. Music from that age also provided a lively soundtrack to the event, which provided six hours of fun in the town centre.
Costumes from the 1940s were also in plentiful supply, while soldier outfits took people back to the war years. A lookalike for Captain Mainwaring of ‘Dad’s Army’ attracted plenty of attention.
Cllr David Smith said attendance numbers has been good when the rain stayed away, allowing the event to bounce back in style from last year, when it proved a complete washout.
In particular he praised the bands and singers for the lively music, which made a good impression throughout.
Cllr Smith said: “The event was very well organised and a lot of people enjoyed themselves.
“The entertainers were very good and our more elderly residents who can remember those days enjoyed it hugely.”
Cllr Smith said that the bigger stage this year had helped to make a difference.
The 1940s day plays a significant role in the town’s calendar and has maintained a steady level over the years.
Cllr Smith said: “It is an important event for this time of year.”
