CLARETS star Joey Barton brought smiles to the faces of dozens of hospice patients as two charities link up for the first time.

The midfielder, along with defender Jon Flanagan, visited Pendleside Hospice to promote Community Day, which will see the match against Manchester United next week ‘taken over’ by Burnley FC in the Community and the hospice to raise awareness for their work.

They are asking fans of both clubs to ‘bring a quid’ to the game which will then be split between the two organisations.

Barton, who returned to the club last year after a short spell with Rangers, said: “As soon as I walked through the door here I noticed smiles, positivity and laughter.

“Of course this hospice cares for people going through the most traumatic periods of their lives but they are far from gloomy.

“My grandfather and uncle both received hospice care so I know the valuable work they do.

“It’s been a pleasure to come here, meet some patients and staff, crack a few jokes and have a look around.

“I’d encourage the fans before the United game to get involved and bring £1 to donate.

“It’s for two great causes and it’s only about the price of a chocolate bar.”

Alta Hussain, 64, from Brierfield, has motor neurone disease and receives day care and therapy at Pendleside.

He said: “I follow Burnley and watch for their results.

“It was nice to meet Joey and Jon.

“They seemed genuine and friendly and had time to talk and share a joke.”

Helen McVey, CEO of Pendleside Hospice, said: “This is the first of a number of events that will see us come together to raise vital funds to support the work of both charities.

“It’s been a pleasure to welcome Joey and Jon.”

Collections and stalls from both charities will be in and around Turf Moor at the game which kicks of on Sunday, April 23, at 2.15pm.
