A MAN who was filmed chasing and tormenting a 'terrified' puppy with a block of wood has been banned from keeping dogs for a year.

Christopher Dennett, 30 of Anderton Crescent, Buckshaw Village, Chorley was filmed in his back garden swinging the plank of wood at his dog Narla, a young Dogue de Bordeaux breed as it runs away barking.

In a clip played to the court, lasting around a minute, the dog can be seen dodging away from Dennett as he swings the length of wood in Narla's direction.

Dennett, a lorry driver, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the dog by using threatening and abusive behaviour.

Magistrates banned him from keeping dogs for a year.

He was forced to hand over Narla to officers from the Royal Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (RSPCA) to look after her.

RSPCA Inspector Helen Smith said: '"As you can see very clearly from the video, Narla is terrified.

"It is apparent she has been caused unnecessary suffering, fear and distress.

"She is now terrified of men.

"Although we could find no significant physical harm, emotionally she is not in a good way after being treated in this cruel fashion."

Dennett told RSPCA officers he was training the puppy in close quarters defensive techniques to protect his girlfriend.

Dennett was sentenced by magistrates in Preston on Wednesday, March 15.

In addition to the banning order, magistrates fined Dennett, who had no previous convictions £660 and ordered him to pay a £66 surcharge.
