A PROTEST against British-born novelist Salman Rushdie being awarded a knighthood is being organised for Blackburn next month.
Muslims are due to demonstrate outside Blackburn Town Hall on July 21.
The controversial novelist was appointed a Knight Bachelor for "services to literature" which met with disapproval from some Muslim nations and communities, with some claiming that it "may spark terrorism".
His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, provoked violent reactions from Muslims all over the world. After death threats and a fatwa, a religious edict, calling for his assassination, he spent years underground, appearing in public only sporadically.
Tasaddiq Rehman, spokesman for local group, the Muslim Council of Europe, said he expected that there would be a high level of interest.
He said those who want to attend the demonstration should meet at Bangor Street Community Centre, Norris Street, at 2pm.
