A 21-YEAR-OLD man bombarded police with slates, bricks, a metal bar and other missiles during a one-and-a-half hour rooftop siege.

Blackburn magistrates heard that at one stage Thomas William Bank told officers he wanted a McDonald’s or he was going to jump.

Bank, of Astbury Chase, Darwen, pleaded guilty to affray.

He was remanded on bail until January 16 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said police were called to Ratcliffe Street in Darwen at 10.45am because a man was on the roof of a disused building threatening to commit suicide.

Bank threw bricks and a metal bar at the first officer on the scene and he withdrew after forming the opinion he was drunk.

“The siege lasted for one-and-a-half hours during which time he continued to throw things from the roof and threaten officers,” said Miss Allan.

“The fire service, ambulance and police were present and were diverted from being able to attend other incidents.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Bank had been suffering from depression and was told there was a possibility he had a hereditary disease.

“He wasn’t directly targeting anyone and that is shown by the fact nobody was injured,” said Mr Taylor. “He knows he has put the emergency services to a great deal of inconvenience and he is sorry.”
