A PETITION with more than 100 signatures has been presented to Lancashire County Council demanding improved road safety at a school.

Coun Darryl Smith and Coun Anne Cheetham handed the petition to county councillor Duncan Ruddick to highlight frustration at the lack of action outside Stubbins Primary School, despite a meeting with highways officers last November.

Former pupil Coun Smith has led the campaign, along with the school's governors and headteacher Patricia Braddock, to see measures put in place to tackle speeding motorists and bad parking outside the school.

They want better signs and road markings and a crossing patrol put in a more prominent location.

Coun Smith said: "The petition was a last resort - it hasn't been about the quantity of signatures on the petition but more about making a point that many people are concerned about the situation outside Stubbins School.

"They would like Lancashire County Council to get on with the measures they indicated they would implement.

"I am grateful to Coun Ruddick for supporting the campaign and agreeing to hand over the petition.

Coun Ruddick said he would be delivering the petition to Tony Martin, county highways chief, and looked forward to the action being taken.

A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said officers were aware of the concerns and would be carrying out the work as soon as possible.
