Mum Sylvia Lancaster has welcomed the support as she once more must faceone of the worst times of year that marks the anniversary of the tragic day her daughter was killed.

She said: “This is a hard time of year and I feel quite flat as we approach the anniversary of Sophie’s murder.

“But this campaign is wonderful and I am thankful to the organisers who continue to show support.

“The selfie enables young people to be themselves and it and really shows social media being used at its best.” Sophie and her partner Rob were attacked back in 2007 by teenagers Ryan Herbert and Brendan Harris in Stubbeylee Park, Bacup.

After her daughter died, Sylvia set up The Sophie Lancaster Foundation that focuses on creating respect and understanding for subcultures in the community.

So far the charity has raised £20,000.

“It’s really uplifting to see people taking part in the #gothupforsophie challenge.

“And it’s also a really fun way for people to express themselves exactly as they want,” added Sylvia..

The trend has started on Facebook and anyone can take part.
