A MAN and a woman arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man suffered serious stab wounds have been released on bail.

Police said they were called by the ambulance service to a report of a stabbing at a terraced house in Olive Lane, Darwen.

Neighbours described the stab victim emerging ‘covered head to foot in blood’ from the terraced house on a stretcher carried by paramedics.

Some said they believed a broken bottle had been used in the attack.

Officers said a 33-year-old man was taken by the air ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital suffering from wounds to his chest and abdomen. He is being treated by doctors and police said he remained in a stable condition this morning.

One near neighbour described seeing ‘more police and ambulances in one place than I’ve ever seen before’.

He said: “I heard shouting and screaming outside and saw one of the other neighbours banging on his door.

“I think she had heard something though the walls and was trying to get in.

“Soon there were several police vans and cars and an ambulance.

“The helicopter arrived after about 15 minutes and landed on St James’ Primary School field. He was covered from head to foot in blood as they brought the stretcher out.

“By then a crowd had gathered as the paramedics took him to the helicopter.

“We’ve recently moved here and have young children so it’s a bit concerning but before this it’s been quiet.”

Another neighbour, a 29-year-old woman, said: “Within a few minutes police cars had blocked the road in both directions.

“They were outside all night. Everyone was concerned about the man because it looked very serious.”

Councillor Roy Davies, who represents the Sudell ward, said: “We heard the air ambulance landing at St James Primary School and was told there had been a stabbing.”

A police spokesman said said officers had been called at around 7pm on Thursday.

He said: “Two people were arrested in Darwen a short time later on suspicion of attempted murder.

“They are a 25-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, both from Bury.

“They have both been released on bail until July 29.”
