A CAMPAIGN has been launched to have improved road safety measures install-ed outside a school.

Staff, governors and councillors have given a wish list' of safety improvements, which they say are needed at Stubbins Primary School, in Bolton Road North.

To demonstrate to Lancashire County Council the strength of feeling in the village, Coun Darryl Smith organised a petition which has almost 100 signatures.

The petition is backed by fellow ward councillor Anne Cheetham, and Conservative prospective Parliamentary candidate for Rossendale Jake Berry, as well as the school governors.

Coun Smith, a former pupil of the school, said: "It came to a head last year when a speeding car crashed outside the school, just before school finishing time.

Nothing on the list of concerns has been attended to, with the exception of the speed camera being located outside the school on a rota basis."

The campaigners want improved road markings outside the school as, at present, the double yellow lines cannot be enforced as they do not comply with regulations. They also want the crossing patrol warning signs relocated to more prominent locations, installation of safety barriers at crossing points, and improved signage to make speeding traffic leaving the motorway aware the school is there.

Philip Dunne, chairman of governors, said: "The governors are frustrated by the lack of action, or help, from the county council. It is disgraceful. The petition is a last resort and should never have been needed."

A county council spokesman said there were plans to renew road markings. He said: "There are also plans for moving the flashing sign which alerts motorists to the fact they are approaching a school area.

"We try to carry out works like this as soon as possible and hope to be able to continue with our list of works soon."
