Police received reports that the smash had happened at Top O’the Lane, Brindle at around 1.45am. The driver lost control of the Zafira and it left the road, passed through a hedge and into the field.

The fire service spokesman said there were initially fears that the car was on fire and that the occupants needed rescuing.

He, said: "We received a request from police at 1.48am and a crew was dispatched.

"However reports that the vehicle was on fire were not correct.

"It's likely there was a large amount of steam coming from the car due to the extensive damage and that was mistaken for smoke.

"The occupants were able to get out of the wreckage without help and the police cancelled their earlier request for fire and rescue assistance."

It is believed the occupants of the car were a male and a female, their ages and where they are from has not been released by police.

The driver and passenger were later treated for 'cuts and bruises' at hospital, their injuries described as minor.

An image of the car was later tweeted by Lancashire Road police with the caption 'two occupants taken to hospital after car leaves the road in Brindle'.

The incident was the second similar crash in the Brindle and Riley Green area over the Bank Holiday weekend.
