TRIBUTES have been paid to a 'loving husband' who was died after being hit by a car whilst crossing a road in Blackburn.


Denis, Whittaker, 82 suffered a series head injury, broken ankle and broken pelvis following the incident which happened outside the Capita office at the junction of Preston New Road and Barbara Castle Way at 10am on Monday, January 25.

Michelle Padgett, Mr Whittaker's daughter along with son-in-law Chris, and granddaughters Emma and Jess, said: "Denis was a loving husband to the late Pat, dad, granddad , brother-in-law and uncle.

"He was born in Blackburn, served in the Lancashire Fusiliers, worked in Australia and was a painter and decorator by trade.

"He was a football fan, who also enjoyed listening to music, singing and dancing and enjoyed walking and swimming.

"He was taken suddenly before his time in a serious road traffic collision.

"He was well regarded by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed.

"The family wish to thank everyone for their assistance at the scene and also the police and all the staff at Preston Royal Hospital critical care unit. 

"Thanks also to the local community for their support and the kindness and good wishes of friends and neighbours . 

"We would also like to express our sincerest thanks to PC David Miller police liaison officer and Lancashire Police for the compassion and understanding they have shown to our family during this exceptionally difficult time."

  • A 25-year-old Blackburn man, who was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle dangerously, has been released on bail until March 14.
