A TOWN centre tile shop in Accrington could be partially converted into a cafe after the owner won planning permission.

Ian Gregg, who owns Essentials Tile Shop in King Street, said that he hopes to create space for 88 diners on two floors at the premises near the viaduct.

He intends to continue selling tiles in half of the property, which in the past has been used to sell kitchen and bathroom fittings.

At a meeting of Hyndburn Council's planning panel Brent Clarkson said the conversion was a "straightforward" change of use.

But Coun Malcolm Pritchard said an increase in pedestrians that could be caused by opening a cafe in the area would be dangerous.

Coun Pritchard said: "It is a very busy road and an unacceptable site for a cafe."

Despite his concerns, plans for the building, which is close to the Vue Cinema and McDonald's restaurant, were approved.
