A FLASHING inter-active speed sign has been hailed a success in helping to put the brakes on speeding motorists.

The sign has been put up in Pole Lane, Darwen, a road which is often used as a short-cut to the motorway.

It tells drivers their speed and warns them to slow down if it is too high.

Coun Frank Connor, who has been working to improve road safety, said he had recently spent an hour on the road and saw one driver doing over 50mph and 13 driving at over 40mph.

He said: "The interesting thing is all of them braked at the sign.

"I am pleased we got the sign and it was recognised we have a problem with speeding.

"It's a positive and proactive way of encouraging motorists to think about their speed."

Coun Connor is working to get a speed sign installed in Marsh House Lane and speed cameras on both roads.
