A TOP radio DJ was given the fright of her life - on a ghost tour of Samlesbury Hall.

Radio 1 presenter Edith Bowman stopped off at the hall, in Preston New Road, during a whistle-stop tour of Lancashire ahead of the station's Big Weekend in Preston tomorrow.

East Lancashire ghost expert Simon Entwistle gave Edith a tour of the hall, and told her stories of murder, cruelty and ghost sightings.

On arrival, the Radio 1 van was renamed the Scooby Doo van, before the search for ghosts and ghouls began.

A walk to the priest's room, where Catholic priest John Southworth was executed, left Edith feeling a little queasy.

The priest's room is well known for making those who stand in it feel as though they are on a boat.

Edith said: "I do feel something in this room."

To coax another ghost, who has been known to tug on blonde hair, from the woodwork she called to him.

Edith said: "The building is incredible. It's a beautiful place.

"I didn't expect it to be this grand really. I've been on a few ghost tours. I love them.

"I've never seen a ghost, but I'm into the whole idea.

"My mum, Eleanor, has had an experience. She saw my granddad at the end of her bed."

Simon said: "It was brilliant. It is great that Edith came to Samlesbury for the tour.

"This building is in the premier league of ghost houses in the country."

A piece on the tour was broadcast on the station.

The Big Weekend, a free festival in Moor Park this weekend, is expected to attract 30,000 spectators to see bands such as the Kaiser Chiefs and Scissor Sisters.
