BLACKBURN and Darwen's new mayor has promised to promote the borough and champion children's causes.
Coun Maureen McGarvey was installed as the borough's first citizen at a council meeting last night.
Coun Fred Slater was due to be mayor but he died suddenly last year.
His widow Coun Jacqui Slater said she was pleased Coun McGarvey had been given the role as the pair were good friends.
Coun McGarvey was re-elected earlier this month to represent Roe Lee.
Her mayoress will be fellow Tory Ann Law-Riding.
Coun McGarvey, a councillor for 16 years, got into politics after getting involved in community groups in Little Harwood where she used to live.
She is married to Patrick and they have three children and nine grandchildren.
Coun McGarvey said: "It is important to listen to young people.
"During my year as mayor, this is what I hope to do."
Her hobbies include reading, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren.
