A WOMAN was just 30 minutes from death yesterday after becoming trapped in mud off a beach, according to firefighters.

The 52-year-old woman, and her 62-year-old husband, from Blackburn, were off the Lytham coast in their boat when they got stuck in mud after trying to release a propellor.

Manager at St Anne's and Lytham fire station, Mark Smith, said: "I think half-an-hour later and we would have been reporting a fatality."

The woman was treated for hypothermia and leg injuries at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

The man was able to free himself, but was also taken to hospital.

Both were released a few hours later. The couple's boat got stuck on Wednesday and they alerted the coastguard.

The next morning they found the boat had run aground and the man tried to free rope from the propellor.

When he got stuck, his wife went to help him and got trapped as well.
