SCOUTS in East Lancashire could become part of a record-breaking camping bid to celebrate 100 years of the movement.

Around 1,500 Scouts, from packs across Blackburn, Burnley and surrounding towns, are to spend the night under canvas at Bowley Camp, Great Harwood, this Saturday and Sunday.

If the Scouts' plans come to fruition, more than 200,000 nationwide will honour the memory of Lord Baden Powell.

As well as the main campers, there will also be around 300 to 400 younger Beaver Scouts joining in the fun this Saturday.

Mayors from across East Lancashire have been invited to Bowley to witness the gathering.

The opening ceremony will take place at noon on Saturday, with a Scout show pencilled in for 9.30pm, before the close of the festivities at 3pm on Sunday.

It is estimated there will be 150 similar camping events up and down the country this weekend, making it into the largest camping project ever to be undertaken by the Scouts Association.
