A BLUE plaque is to be put up at Turf Moor as part of Burnley Football Club's 125th anniversary.

The plaque is set to be erected inside the ground in a prominent position, although the exact wording and site are yet to be finalised.

It will mark the club's role as one of the founder members of the Football League.

The club is working with the Burnley Historical Society, which decides on who or what should qualify for a blue plaque.

A spokesman for Burnley Football Club said: "The plaques are to commemorate important events or people. In our case the 125th anniversary.

"We will have to decide on the wording we would like and where we would place a plaque within the ground, obviously a fairly prevalent position would be required.

"But it looks like it will happen shortly."

The club has already produced a special souvenir programme for the final home game of the season against Coventry.

Other events are also being planned for the anniversary - which actually falls on May 18 - including an 125th anniversary-themed match, a commemorative kit, marquee dinner and supporters competitions.

A book, Clarets Chronicles, the Definitive History of Burnley Football Club 1882-2007, has been produced by club historian Ray Simpson.

Other blue plaque recipients include Burnley-born actor Ian McKellen, whose birthplace in Scott Park Road has a plaque, and World War I soldier Thomas Whitham, who is set to have a plaque erected in his home village of Worsthorne.
