A BID to make a former surgery a listed building has been rejected.

English Heritage has refused to give listed status to the building in the controversial Redearth triangle.

Residents, who have obtained compulsory purchase orders to stop demolition work in the past, applied for the building on the corner of Redearth Road and Sudell Road to be listed.

The application was refused on the grounds that the original building, built in 1710, was demolished in the late 1800s before being rebuilt and has changed considerably since then.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has proposed that the £34m Rod Aldridge Community Academy be built on the Redearth Triangle, Redearth Road, and opponents hoped that listed status would stop the project.

But a letter from English Heritage said: "This building has been substantially altered and has lost most of it's original features."

Residents can appeal.
