A FIRE broke out at an engineering firm after sparks accidentally ignited some paper.

A crew from Padiham fire station plus one from Burnley were called to the firm next to the MOT centre in Higham Street at 5.15pm on Saturday.

Padiham crew manager Bob Marsden said: "We believe that the fire was started accidentally. Some grinding work had taken place in the building earlier in the afternoon, and we think some sparks ignited paper on the floor.

"The owner returned with the keys quickly, which meant we were able to gain access and contain the fire to a car inside the building, there was no structural damage the premises itself was pretty much unharmed aside from the smoke."

Firefighters spent nearly two at the scene, using two breathing apparatus and a jet to put out the flames, which left the Vauxhall Corsa inside the building badly damaged.

A car parked outside the premises was also left damaged.

Two propane cylinders were also removed from the building.
