SUDELL councillor Roy Davies is to quiz the borough council and United Utilities bosses on why Knott Street was excavated by workmen twice in just a few weeks.

He said local businesses, shoppers and residents had suffered enough disruption with the third set of repair work in seven months following the 2012 floods in Darwen town centre.

In February Knott Street was closed to traffic for five weeks for the final stages of £500,000 worth of repair and prevention work.

In June it was closed again for four weeks for further highway repair work.

Then last month it was closed for another two weeks as United Utilities dug up the road for water main work.

Cllr Davies, who represents Sudell on Darwen Town Council, said: “I understand the work on road strengthening was needed after the flooding.

“We had five weeks in February and then another four in June and July.

“Then just as we get back to normal, I find United Utilities have dug the road up again.

“I shall question the water company and the borough council about why they could not co-ordinate this work and do it together. Digging up Knott Street twice in two months and three times in seven is not fair on local businesses and shoppers.”
