EAST Lancashire students are celebrating after many achieved record GCSE grades.

Schools across the region announced some of their best results with the percentage of students receiving five or more grades between A* and C increasing from 2014.

It comes after the proportion of GCSEs awarded at a C grade nationally rose, but top grades fell for the fourth year in a row.

Darwen Aldridge Community Academy saw 57 per cent of the students achieve five or more GCSEs at A* to C grade, up from 52 per cent last year.

Academy principal Brendan Loughran said: “We are pleased our students have achieved another very good set of GCSE results.

“Once again, in maths and English our students achieve well above national averages, consolidating three years of very good results since our last inspection.”

Pleckgate School recorded its best set of results with a 58 per cent pass rate for pupils gaining five or more A* to C grades.

English and maths were also both boosted, to 75 per cent and 72 per cent respectively.

Head teacher Mark Bradshaw said: “These results, which are the best in the school’s history, are testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone concerned and I am sure they will be used as a firm foundation for even greater success in the future.”

Every student at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School earned grades of A* to C, with 90 per cent receiving grades between A* and B.

Head teacher Judith Child said: “We are immensely proud and delighted.”

The Hollins Technology College in Accrington saw 70 per cent of its students achieve five or more A* to C grades, the joint highest in the school’s history.

Westholme School in Blackburn revealed 75 per cent of all grades were at B or above and 43 per cent were A* or As.

Stonyhurst College celebrated its best GCSE results with 51 per cent of papers gaining A* or A and 90 per cent gaining A* to C.

Diane Atkinson, head teacher at Blackburn Central High School, said: “ There has been a significant improvement in all areas particularly with 100 per cent of our students securing grades A*-C in RE, Urdu, English literature, music and additional maths.”

At Accrington Academy, 47 per cent of students gained five or more GCSEs at A* to C.

Other school’s percentage results (A* to C) included: Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Blackburn, 90 per cent; St Wilfrid’s CE Academy, Blackburn, 76.4 per cent; St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington, 71 per cent; Mount Carmel RC High School, Accrington, 60 per cent; Islamiyah School, Blackburn, 60 per cent; Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College, Blackburn, 89 per cent.

St Cecilia’s RC High School in Longridge saw a 72 per cent A* to C pass rate in maths with 75 per cent at Longridge High School.

Oakhill College in Whalley, St Christopher’s CE High School in Accrington, Haslingden High School, St Bede’s Catholic High School and Witton Park in Blackburn, Bowland High School in Grindleton, Ribblesdale High School in Clitheroe, Rhyddings High School in Oswaldtwistle and Our Lady and St John Catholic Arts College in Blackburn all congratulated their students.
