POLICE investigating the accidental overdose of a Darwen man are testing pills seized from an address in the town.

Officers executed a search warrant in Jubilee Street yesterday morning, and found a “quantity” of tablets they think could be illegal drugs.

The 20-year-old man, who was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital after suffering hallucinations and seizures at Mayfield Flats in Bolton Road on Friday, remained in a critical condition.

A police spokesman said: “Officers conducted a warrant at an address in Jubilee Street, Darwen, and recovered a quantity of as-yet-unidentified pills.

“Forensic tests will now be carried out to establish exactly what the pills are.”

Police were yesterday unable to say how many pills had been seized.

Tests are also being carried out on what police believe is LSD. Warning others against taking the drug, officers released a picture of the suspected LSD — it showed yellow smiley faces on edible paper.

Otherwise known as acid, LSD stands for its chemical name, lysergic acid diethylamide. It is a powerful hallucinogenic drug.

Users experience a distorted view of reality, called a trip, which includes time and movement appearing to speed up and slow down.

The drug is not known for being lethal. Drugs-advice charity Talk To Frank said there is no evidence to suggest LSD does any long-term damage to the body or the brain, although it can have serious implications for people with a history of mental illness.

Det Insp Eric Halford, of Blackburn CID, said: “This young man is in a very serious condition in hospital and we are urging anyone in possession of a similar substance to hand in to us to prevent anyone else from falling ill.

“We are also asking members of the public who may know of anyone who is involved in the production and supply of these items to pass this information to the police.

“This can be done anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or by calling 101 and quoting log number 1476 of July 31.”

l A 20-year-old man from Darwen was arrested on suspicion of possessing class-A drugs with intent to supply and was in police custody yesterday.

An 18-year-old man, also from Darwen, arrested over the weekend on suspicion of the same crime was released on police bail until October 20.
