A MAN is fighting for his life after an unprovoked early hours attack left him with severe head injuries.

The incident happened on the Flat Iron Car Park, New Market Street, Chorley, close to Booths supermarket.

It is thought that the victim, a 30-year-old Wigan man, was punched once to the head by another man.

The victim fell to the floor, hitting his head on the concrete which knocked him unconscious.

The man was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with head injuries were he remains in a critical condition.

Police said they believed the attacker walked from the Applejax nightclub on Market Street and had tried to confront a number of other people before coming into contact with the victim on the car park. Detectives investigating the assault - at around 4.20am on Sunday - are trying to trace any witnesses.

DI Philip Bowerbank of Preston Police said: “This is a serious incident and a man has been left with potentially life-threatening head injuries.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident to contact us.

“We know there were a large number of revellers in the area at the time of the incident so if any of them witnessed what happened or events leading up to the assault, please come forward.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 312 of July 19.

A 19-year-old man from Chorley was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and has since been released on bail pending enquiries.
