AN explosion was caused after arsonists are believed to have started a blaze at a house under renovation.

Residents in Rhoden Street, Oswaldtwistle, called fire crews to a house across the road after they heard a loud explosion.

Fires had been started in a shed, and in the doorway of the house.

It is believed the petrol tank of a lawnmower caused the explosion at 9.45pm on Thursday.

Watch manager Peter Frazer said: "Two fire engines were called after fires were started both outside and inside the house.

"It is thought the fires were started by somebody lighting piles of paper.

"The fire is being treated as suspicious and is being investigated by police. "
