AN amateur singer has become an internet star after children filmed him on their mobile phones and posted the footage online.

And Tony Pollitt, who impersonates stars ranging from Elvis to Eminem, said he was glad to finally get some recognition and spread a few smiles across the internet.

Computer users around the world have been introduced to the talents of Tony, from Barnoldswick, through the YouTube site, which allows people to upload home-made videos.

Around 10 videos of the cyber celebrity have been posted under both his real name and his alias, Tony "Elvis" Tucker. They have been watched by more than 1,000 people.

Tony's Elvis impersonations, raps and poems have been posted on the internet by his many fans among the youth of Barnoldswick.

And other videos of the 56-year-old have been posted showing pub performances and comedy poem recitals spanning several decades.

Now Tony hopes the exposure will give him his big break into showbusiness.

Tony was speaking from moorings near the Kelbrook Road canal bridge, where he has become a familiar face since moving into a temporary houseboat six months ago.

The ex-Ermysteads pupil, who has a degree in languages, said he had always been a something of a wordsmith and got a lot of pleasure from making people laugh.

Tony said his talents were first recorded on tape by friends during his university days.

He added: "I've been writing funny songs and poetry for years and I'm very musical.

"I played in Ermysteads orchestra. I used to play guitar and I've always liked singing. I wrote many songs over the years but I think my main passion is my poetry and writing.

"It's off the cuff - I'm quick with words and I'm into word origins."

Tony, who is also often seen around Barnoldswick on his drop-handled bicycle, thinks the overnight publicity YouTube has given him is a great example of the internet's ability to empower ordinary people.

"It's fun to be getting recognised at last," he added. "I wouldn't mind getting noticed by someone who could give me a deal. I've got aspirations to get my written stuff published. But even if nothing comes of it I don't mind because fun's my main theme.

"I just love being loved and I love making people laugh."
