A 15-YEAR-OLD boy tried to protect his mum when she was attacked by her former partner.

Blackburn magistrates heard the woman was subsequently knocked to the ground and her head stamped on by Paul Steven Barnes who also assaulted her son.

Barnes, 46, of Crediton Close, Blackburn, was convicted after trial of two charges of assault.

He was made subject to community supervision for 12 months with a 30-day rehabilitation requirement and ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the woman, £150 to her son, £500 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Barnes had gone round to the victim’s home after drinking and climbed over the backyard wall. Inside the house he accused his former partner of seeing someone else and became very aggressive.

“Her son stood between them, trying to protect his mum, and the defendant threatened to kill him if he didn’t get out of the way,” said Miss Allan.

Barnes kneed the boy in the face while he was phoning the police and at one point picked the woman up and “body slammed” her to the floor. While she was there he stamped on her head.

The boy later told police Barnes had “behaved like an animal”.
