A MAN has died after being found with serious injuries on the Edenfield bypass.

The man from Rochdale, who has not yet been formally identified by police, was found lying on the A56 slip road beneath the Tesco Haslingden flyover by an off duty police officer. He is believed to have fallen from the flyover.

Police and paramedics were called at 3.20am yesterday, and the man was rushed to Burnley General Hospital, where he died shortly afterwards. Police are not treating his death as suspicious.

Inspector Richard Clare, from Burnley police, said: "The off duty officer, from Greater Manchester Police, was driving along the A56 bypass in the direction of Accrington when he came across the man's body lying underneath the flyover, in a serious condition.

"The man appears to have landed head-first onto the bypass. We do not yet know the full circums-tances of how he came to be lying on the road, but there is nothing to indicate that he had been involved in a traffic accident."

DI Dean Holden from Burnley CID said: "We still do not know exactly how he came to fall from the bridge, but there is nothing to suggest there are any suspicious circumstances."

The bypass was cordoned off and closed to traffic around the flyover area until mid morning yesterday.
